Peter Roskam proudly represents Illinois’ Sixth District in the United States Congress. He serves as Ways & Means Tax Policy Chairman and is expected to play a leading role in fixing our broken tax code and increasing American competitiveness in 2017. He previously served as Oversight Chairman and used his gavel to rein in executive overreach. He led the investigation into IRS political targeting and passed legislation to reform the troubled agency. Peter wrote and passed the “Taxpayer Bill of Rights” into law, leading Americans for Tax Reform to call him “a dogged defender of taxpayers against IRS abuse.”

Peter quarterbacked the opposition to President Obama’s dangerous nuclear deal with Iran, bucking his own party’s leadership to force the administration to reveal the side deals it had made with the Islamic Republic before allowing a vote. He continues to use his chairmanship to fight terrorism through the tax code and keep money out of the hands of the world’s largest state sponsor of terror.

Peter has established himself as a leader in Congress fighting against Medicare fraud. The administration has acknowledged a fraud and erroneous payment rate over 12% at a time when credit card companies like Visa have cut fraud to 0.06%. This is unacceptable – and Peter will continue to push Medicare to adopt private sector innovations and new technology to prevent improper payments.

A lifelong Illinoisan, Peter’s roots run deep in Chicago’s western suburbs. Born in Hinsdale, raised in Glen Ellyn and now living in Wheaton, Peter has always been part of suburban Chicagoland. He graduated from Glenbard West High School and the University of Illinois. He earned his law degree from IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law.

He taught high school, ran a nonprofit scholarship program for disadvantaged students and worked for his mentor, the legendary Congressman Henry Hyde. He also served in the Illinois House of Representatives and the Illinois Senate.

Peter has been married to Elizabeth, an accomplished oil painter, for over 28 years. Together they have four adult children and a very sweet dog named Max.
