How to set up backup for Parallels

Step 1: Launch the Parallels Desktop application

Click the Parallels icon on the Mac menu bar and select "Control Center.

The Parallels Desktop Control Center appears.

Step 2: Click on the [gear] icon

Installed virtual machines are shown here.

Once launched, the Control Center will appear. Click on the [gear] icon of the virtual machine you wish to back up.

Step 3: Click "Backup

Click "Backup" at the top of the settings window.

Then set the backup options.

Backup Options

Option name Contents
SmartGuard To automatically create snapshots of virtual machines, select "SmartGuard" > "Advanced" and specify how often snapshots should be created, how many snapshots should be stored, and whether you want to be notified before a new snapshot is created.
Do not back up using Time Machine By default, Time Machine automatically backs up virtual machines along with macOS files. Select this option if you want to back up your virtual machines in a different way and exclude them from Time Machine backups.
Installing Acronis True Image... Use this option when installing Acronis True Image to back up both Macs and virtual machines.

Click "Restore Defaults" to restore the settings.

When should I back up my virtual machines?

It is strongly recommended that you back up your virtual machines before performing the following operations.

  • Virtual hard disk compression
  • Virtual hard disk expansion/Resizing
  •  macOSReinstallation of/upgrade
  •  Windows(guestOS) upgrades

In other situations, it is recommended that virtual machines be backed up every few months, depending on the amount of changes made to the system.
